Biomedical Research and Mentoring Program -- Spring 2019

This past spring semester, I was involved in UHP’s Biomedical Research and Mentoring Program (RaMP). I worked in the Vorhees/Williams Lab at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center under the guidance of Emily Pitzer. The project I worked on focused on the neurotoxicity of the insecticide deltamethrin during development. In the lab, I was responsible for running Western Blots and dosing rats with deltamethrin and corn oil.

As I plan to pursue research in the future, RaMP has provided me with an invaluable learning opportunity. This was my first research experience I have had, and this allowed me to gain some baseline lab experience as well as to learn the importance of values such as collaboration and curiosity in a research setting. This experience solidified my desire to eventually make laboratory research my career, as I found it very fascinating to help determine the various neurological disparities exhibited by the brain. I will continue this experience and further pursue this research in the summer, where I will also be assisting other lab members in their behavior-focused projects. During this time, I hope to learn more in-depth details about my project and learn about the other behavior-focused projects in the lab.
